Import a Toyota Prius from Japan to Ireland: what it really costs
The same car Toyota sold new in Ireland, so EU CO2 figures exist for most generations.
The Prius is the safest Japanese import there is: a familiar car with an Irish dealer network, known CO2 figures and a hybrid system with a long record. Cartell’s import data put it fifth among Japan-sourced models in 2025.
Japan-market Priuses are Japanese-built, so the 0% duty rate applies with a Statement on Origin. The main variables are the OMSP Revenue assigns and, for third-generation cars, the NEDC-to-WLTP uplift.

Worked scenarios
Computed with the same engine as the calculator when this page was built. Prices and Irish values are assumptions. The right-hand range shows what happens when the CO2 evidence comes back at 94, 100, 108 g/km. Open any row and replace the assumptions with a real car.
| Car | Price in Japan | Irish value | CO2 → band | Landed incl. fee | CO2 94–108 | Open in calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 ZVW30, 90,000 kmHybrid | ¥550,000 | €8,500 | 89 NEDC → 117 → band 10, 16% | €9,171 | €8,667–€8,858 | Open |
| 2019 ZVW50, 60,000 kmHybrid | ¥1,300,000 | €18,000 | 108 → band 8, 13.5% | €15,405 | €15,000–€15,405 | Open |
| 2021 ZVW50, 40,000 kmHybrid | ¥1,750,000 | €22,000 | 100 → band 6, 12% | €18,758 | €18,593–€19,088 | Open |
- 2014 ZVW30, 90,000 km: Third-generation cars carry an NEDC figure (89 g/km in Europe), which Revenue uplifts before banding; price and value are assumptions for a grade-4 car.
- 2019 ZVW50, 60,000 km: The business plan’s worked example: ¥1.3m hammer, €18,000 Irish value, WLTP 108 g/km.
- 2021 ZVW50, 40,000 km: A late fourth-generation car on smaller wheels, hence the lower WLTP figure; price and value are assumptions.
VRT and the OMSP
Fourth-generation cars usually have a WLTP figure available, which is the number Revenue bands on. Third-generation cars carry NEDC figures, and Revenue’s uplift (× 0.9227 + 34.554) pushes an 89 g/km car to about 117 g/km, two bands higher.
OMSP for a Prius is well established because the car was sold new here, so the estimate range is narrower than for Japan-only models.
NOx levy
Petrol hybrids certify low NOx, so the levy is small with evidence and €600 without it. Make sure the Certificate of Conformity or disclosure carries the NOx figure as well as CO2.
Without evidence Revenue charges €600 for petrol and hybrid cars, €4,850 for diesels.
Customs duty and origin
Japanese-built, so 0% customs duty applies under the EU–Japan agreement, provided the exporter supplies a Statement on Origin. Without it, 10% of the customs value is charged. Ask for the statement before you bid, not after.
Built in: Japan (Toyota’s Tsutsumi plant, Toyota City). Japanese-built, so the EU–Japan 0% duty rate applies with a Statement on Origin.
Insurance
The Prius is a mainstream model here, so insurance is rarely a problem. Japan-market trim names (S, A, E and so on) do not match Irish ones; insurers rate it as the equivalent Irish Prius. Disclose that it is an import.
Generations
- ZVW30 (2009–2015): third generation, 1.8-litre hybrid. European figures are NEDC, so Revenue uplifts them to a WLTP equivalent before banding.
- ZVW50 (2015–2022): fourth generation, with European WLTP figures from around 94 to 108 g/km depending on wheels and trim.
- 60-series (2023 on): fifth generation; few are cheap enough to import yet.
Before you bid
- Check hybrid battery health on 2009–2012 cars; no manufacturer battery warranty applies after export.
- Prius PHV plug-in variants use a Japanese Type 1 charging inlet; you will need an adaptor for Irish Type 2 chargers.
- Japanese tyres often lack the E-mark the NCT requires: budget €300–600 for a set.
- The radio needs a band expander for Irish FM (Japan uses 76–90 MHz) and the navigation unit is in Japanese; most buyers fit an aftermarket head unit.
- Cars from snowy prefectures can carry underbody corrosion from road salt; ask for underside photos or an inspection before bidding.
- Book the NCTS appointment within 7 days of arrival and register within 30, or penalties apply.
Where the numbers come from
- Importer sources in 2026 quoted grade 4 to 5 Priuses at roughly $8,500–$10,000 at auction and about $12,000–$14,500 landed in Ireland (research brief). Treat these as directional.
- A 2019 Prius on an Irish forecourt was €17,500–€19,000 in the business plan’s comparison, against a landed cost in the mid-teens before the sourcing fee.
- Cartell counted 1,268 Priuses imported from Japan between January and September 2025.
Questions people ask
Is a Toyota Prius duty-free to import from Japan?
Yes, with a Statement on Origin from the exporter: Japan-market Priuses are Japanese-built, so the EU–Japan 0% rate applies. Without the statement, 10% duty is charged on the customs value.
What VRT band is a Prius?
A fourth-generation car with a WLTP figure of around 108 g/km bands at 13.5% of OMSP; lower-CO2 trims band lower. A third-generation car’s 89 g/km NEDC figure is uplifted to about 117 g/km, which bands at 16%. The worked scenarios show the euro effect.
Is it cheaper than buying a Prius in Ireland?
In the worked scenario a 2019 car lands in the mid-teens against €17,500–€19,000 on a forecourt, before the sourcing fee. The saving depends on the hammer price, the OMSP Revenue assigns and the exchange rate, which is why the calculator shows a range rather than one number.
Can I insure a Japanese-import Prius?
Almost always, because the model is mainstream here. Disclose that it is an import and expect the insurer to rate it as the Irish-market equivalent trim.
How long does the import take?
Typically 8 to 14 weeks from auction to Irish plates: a week or two in Japan for deregistration and export paperwork, four to six at sea, then customs clearance, the NCTS appointment and registration.
