Import a Toyota Corolla hybrid from Japan to Ireland: what it really costs

Corolla Sport (hatch), Corolla Touring (estate), Corolla sedan and the older Fielder and Axio. Irish Corollas are British-built; Japanese ones are Japanese-built, which is what matters for duty.

The Corolla hybrid is the grown-up alternative to the Aqua: the same idea, a size bigger, with an Irish dealer network that knows the drivetrain. Japan sells it in body styles Ireland never got, including the Touring estate and the older Fielder and Axio.

Japanese-built, so duty-free with a Statement on Origin. Whether EU CO2 figures exist depends on the body: the Corolla Sport hatch matches the European car, while the Japan-only bodies need a disclosure.

Worked scenarios

Computed with the same engine as the calculator when this page was built. Prices and Irish values are assumptions. The right-hand range shows what happens when the CO2 evidence comes back at 95, 105, 115 g/km. Open any row and replace the assumptions with a real car.

  • 2016 Corolla Fielder hybrid, 70,000 km: A Japan-only estate with the 1.5 hybrid; 95 g/km assumes a disclosure similar to the Aqua. Price and value are assumptions.
  • 2019 Corolla Sport hybrid G, 40,000 km: The hatch matches the European Corolla 1.8 hybrid, so a WLTP figure around 105 g/km is likely to be accepted. Price and value are assumptions.
  • 2021 Corolla Touring hybrid, 30,000 km: Same drivetrain as the hatch in the Japan-market estate body; 105 g/km assumes the disclosure lands near the European figure.

VRT and the OMSP

The Corolla Sport hatch has a European twin, so its WLTP figure and OMSP are both well established. The Japan-only bodies are valued by statistical code and need a CO2 disclosure, so allow a wider range on the Fielder, Axio and Touring.

Across the likely 95–115 g/km range the percentage moves from 11.25% to 15.25% of OMSP; on a €24,000 estate that is about €1,000 either way.

NOx levy

Toyota hybrids certify very low NOx, so the levy is small with evidence and €600 without it. Make sure the Certificate of Conformity or disclosure carries the NOx figure.

Without evidence Revenue charges €600 for petrol and hybrid cars, €4,850 for diesels.

Customs duty and origin

Japanese-built, so 0% customs duty applies under the EU–Japan agreement, provided the exporter supplies a Statement on Origin. Without it, 10% of the customs value is charged. Ask for the statement before you bid, not after.

Built in: Japan (Toyota’s Takaoka plant and Toyota Motor East Japan for the Fielder and Axio). Japanese-built, so the EU–Japan 0% duty rate applies with a Statement on Origin.

Insurance

Insurers know the Corolla, so the hatch is straightforward. The Japan-only estate and saloon bodies are usually rated as a Corolla too; disclose that it is an import and mention the body style.

Generations

  • Fielder and Axio hybrid (E160, 2013 on): a 1.5-litre hybrid closely related to the Aqua’s, in estate and saloon bodies never sold here. No EU figures, so a disclosure is needed.
  • Corolla Sport hybrid (E210, 2018 on): the same 1.8-litre hybrid hatch Europe got, with WLTP figures around 100–110 g/km.
  • Corolla Touring and sedan hybrid (E210, 2019 on): 1.8 hybrid in a narrower Japan-market body than the European estate and saloon; a disclosure is likely.

Before you bid

  • The Japan-market Touring and sedan are narrower than the European estate and saloon, so some body panels and glass are Japan-only parts.
  • Check hybrid battery health on older Fielder and Axio cars; no manufacturer battery warranty applies after export.
  • Japanese tyres often lack the E-mark the NCT requires: budget €300–600 for a set.
  • The radio needs a band expander for Irish FM (Japan uses 76–90 MHz) and the navigation unit is in Japanese; most buyers fit an aftermarket head unit.
  • Cars from snowy prefectures can carry underbody corrosion from road salt; ask for underside photos or an inspection before bidding.
  • Book the NCTS appointment within 7 days of arrival and register within 30, or penalties apply.

Where the numbers come from

  • Cartell’s import data for January to September 2025 counted 6,704 hybrids from Japan; the Corolla family is among the larger contributors alongside the Prius, Aqua and Note.
  • We have not yet captured audited auction prices for the Corolla hybrid. The scenarios use assumed prices; replace them with a real listing in the calculator.

Questions people ask

Is a Corolla hybrid from Japan duty-free?

Yes, with a Statement on Origin: Japan-market Corollas are Japanese-built, so the EU–Japan 0% rate applies. Irish-market Corollas are built in Britain, which is irrelevant to a Japanese import but explains why the two are not identical.

Which Corolla hybrid body is the easiest import?

The Corolla Sport hatch, because it matches the European car: EU CO2 figures exist, the OMSP is well established and parts are local. The Touring, Fielder and Axio are worth having but need a disclosure and a wider value range.

What VRT band is a Corolla hybrid?

Around 12.75% of OMSP for a hatch with a WLTP figure near 105 g/km, and between 11.25% and 15.25% across the likely range for the disclosed bodies. The worked scenarios show the euro effect.

Can I insure a Japanese-import Corolla in Ireland?

Yes. The model is mainstream here; disclose that it is an import and, for the estate or saloon, mention the body style.

How long does the import take?

Typically 8 to 14 weeks from auction to Irish plates: a week or two in Japan for deregistration and export paperwork, four to six at sea, then customs clearance, the NCTS appointment and registration.
